This book is about Catherine (or Cath), a lady in the Kingdom of Heart, and her desire to own a bakery with her best friend. The King of Hearts however has eyes for young Cath. He has all but asked her to marry him. Then, a mysterious joker named Jest comes to town, and Cath is taken with him instantly.
This is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, but it is more the precursor to Alice in Wonderland. This is the beginning of the Queen of Hearts. This is a story of love, loss, whimsy, darkness, and biggest of all: fate. This book, though lacking in diversity, is a great retelling of a classic world that we have all heard stories about.
I will say that this story has a lot of exposition, and it can get a little boring at first, but if you can stick with it for the introductions, you will fall in love with the Kingdom of Heart.
For readers, this book will fill you with fantasy and heartbreak. Please give it a read.
For librarians, this book will be devoured by any Meyer fans itching for something after The Lunar Chronicles wrapped up.
